MEDIA RELEASE         23 April, 1999
Hon Malcolm Buckby MP

NATIONAL GOALS FOR SCHOOLING IN THE 21ST CENTURY

State, Territory and Commonwealth Education Ministers today committed themselves to further strengthening links between schools and the wider communities, enhancing the status and quality of teachers and increasing public confidence in school education.

The Adelaide Declaration is a set of national goals for schooling in the 21st century endorsed by the 10th Ministerial Council of Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs meeting in Adelaide.

MCEETYA chairman, State Education Minister Malcolm Buckby, says the joint declaration includes input from a wide range of stakeholders including the Australian Council of State School Organisations, the Australian Education Union, all state and federal catholic school organisations and independent schools.

"These national goals provide the basis for investment in schooling to enable young people to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world," he says.
"By having common and agreed goals for schooling across all states and territories and by improving the quality of schooling nationally, this can only enhance the educational outcomes for all young Australians.
"By providing a supportive and nurturing environment, schooling contributes to the development of students' sense of self-worth, enthusiasm for learning and optimism for the future."

Mr Buckby says the declaration recognises the growing importance of vocational education and building environments where schools work in partnership with business, industry and the wider community.

Ministers have also agreed to eight key learning areas to be a prime focus into the next century.

They includes, the arts; English; health and physical education; languages other than English; mathematics; science; studies of society and environment and technology.

"It is from this core curriculum and the interrelationships between them that schooling can develop fully the talents and capacities of all students," Mr Buckby says.
