Initiatives targeting Recommendation 16Northern TerritoryNT Police Juvenile Pre-Court Diversion Scheme - Family and victim offender conference facilitation School based constables, police officers, a large number of teachers and some students have been trained in victim offender conference facilitation. Family conferences and victim offender conferences have a high priority in the Scheme because they require a higher level of involvement of family and relevant stakeholders in the juvenile's development. Any people who may impact upon the juvenile's long-term behaviour are encouraged to attend. This may include family, relatives, church leaders, Indigenous elders, teachers or sporting coaches. A range of undertakings, as part of a diversion option, may be agreed to. Target group: Juveniles who commit a minor offence. Coverage: All urban centres, and communities. Timeframe: Ongoing Responsible agency: Northern Territory Police Website: www.nt.gov.au/pfes/ Kids Help Line Peer Skills Program Kids Help Line provide training for Peer Skills facilitators to present workshops to secondary students. The facilitators come from a range of community organisations and the Department of Employment, Education and Training, and facilitate workshops as part of their existing jobs. Kids Help Line employs a coordinator to manage the program. The program delivers communication, problem solving and referral skills to a group of young people who are trained to become peer helpers. The program is an effective preventative measure. Research has shown that young people are more likely to discuss problems with their friends than their parents or professionals. Target group: Secondary aged students experiencing problems at home and at school. It encourages, supports and assists them during their secondary school years to improve their academic attainment and achieve their career aspirations. Target group: Indigenous students in urban secondary schools Coverage: Urban secondary schools in the NT Timeframe: 2001 - 2004 Responsible agency: Department of Employment, Education and Training Website: www.education.nt.gov.au Extension of The Aboriginal and Islander Tertiary Aspiration Program (AITAP) to include Indigenous secondary students attending remote community schools and Indigenous students in urban secondary schools aged 12 years and upwards. The program will focus on student progression to tertiary education and employment; transition from primary to secondary schooling; retention of students through to Year 12; personal development for 'at risk' Indigenous students such as building sound study skills.
