Local Learning and Employment Networks

LLENs are about communities including education and training providers, industry, community and government organisations and individuals working together in partnership to build local education, training and employment pathways for young people.

Target group: Young people aged 15-19 years

Coverage: Metropolitan, rural and regional communities across Victoria

Timeframe: 2001-2004

Managed Individual Pathways

Young people are provided with individual pathways plans related to their education and job aspirations and follow up interventions for those considered at risk after they leave their provider institution.

Target group: Young people aged 15 - 19 years, especially those at risk of dropping out of formal education or training

Coverage: State wide in government schools, TAFE and ACE sectors

Timeframe: 2001-2003

The Framework for Student Support Services in Victorian Government Schools

The Framework incorporates and promotes four levels of activity: Primary Prevention, Early Intervention, Intervention and Restoring Wellbeing - bolstered by principles of Continuity of Care, Partnerships between Schools and Community and Accountability.

Target group: General school population

Opportunities for teacher professional development in initial teacher training

DET guidelines for evaluating teacher education courses to ensure that initial teacher education courses prepare graduates in the ethical, professional and organisational contexts of teaching.

Target group: Student teachers

Working with Children and Adolescents Affected by Torture and Trauma - The Rainbow Program for Refugee Students - Not a Matter of Choice

Training programs, learning and teaching resources to support refugee students in Victorian schools.

Target group: Refugee students, their teachers and parents

Coverage: Schools with refugee students

Timeframe: Ongoing

Responsible Agency: Department of Education and Training in conjunction with the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture

Connecting Through the Middle Years

This project's objectives are to trial the Advocacy approach in years 5-9 to:

  • improve young people's connection to school;
  • increase young people's personal skills relating to self-understanding;
  • promote and develop individual learning and pathways plans;
  • improve knowledge within the learning organisation of individual students; and
  • develop and disseminate support materials and approaches for teachers working with young people.

Target group: Students in Years 5-9 who are at risk of disconnecting from their peers, family, school and community

Coverage: Pilot of 5 primary schools and secondary schools in 2001 with a further 16 schools being added to program in 2002

Timeframe: After pilot completed it is anticipated that most schools will adopt program

School Focused Youth Service

A joint initiative between the Department of Human Services and the Department of Education and Training where communities and schools work together to improve the quality and range of support services available to young people and their families by maximising efficiency and the range of existing services and, where necessary, providing funds for additional support. Tendered by Department of Human Services to 36 lead agencies across Victoria.

Target group: Young people aged 10 - 18 years at risk of developing behaviours that require support and intervention

Coverage: State wide

Timeframe: 1998 - 2001 extended until December 2002

The Department of Education and Training (DET) and Department of Human Services (DHS) Partnering Agreement

This Agreement aims to ensure that the systems responsible for educating children and young people and providing their care and protection work together co-operatively to improve educational outcomes of children and young people in out-of-home care.

Target group: School age clients of Child Protection and Juvenile Justice Branch who are placed in out-of-home care services for their care and protection

Coverage: State wide

Timeframe: To be finalised in 2002 - ongoing

Enhancing Specialist Behaviour Services - Adolescent Initiative

This initiative aims to develop a comprehensive service model of prevention and treatment for adolescents with a disability who have been identified as 'at risk" of displaying offending behaviour or have established patterns of offending behaviour.

Target group: Adolescents with a disability who are at risk of displaying offending behaviours or have established patterns of offending behaviour

Coverage: All nine Disability Services Regional Offices around Victoria have received funds to implement and pilot a range of models
