'Schools as Communities' project

This project focuses on families and children who are disadvantaged. The project aims to improve social and educational outcomes for children and young people by creating stronger relationships between the school, families and communities. The project links families with health, community and education services. It includes specific initiatives to address the needs and improve the educational outcomes of these children and young people.

'Schools as Communities' is focussed in particular areas. It commenced at the beginning of 2001 in eight schools chosen using a number of data sets from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Family Services. Eight staff have been employed to implement the project. The annual budget is $700 000. In the medium to long-term the project will involve local schools becoming a hub for community activities in a broader capacity. The Secondary Principals' Council has indicated that high schools participating in the program have already observed positive impacts from the additional support.
