Initiatives targeting Recommendation 20

Victoria

Local Learning and Employment Networks

A central aim of each LLEN is to develop local education and training initiatives for 15 -19 year olds, which may include new programs, or packages developed in response to the specific needs and priorities LLENs identifies in their local community.

Target group: Young people aged 15-19 years

Coverage: Metropolitan, rural and regional communities across Victoria

Timeframe: 2001-2004

Managed Individual Pathways Initiative

This initiative involves:

  • developing effective Network and Partnerships
  • delivering support as Managed Individual Pathways
  • providing ready access to a range of learning opportunities which recognise the needs of the young person as identified within the Pathways Plan

Target group: Students aged 15 - 19 years (mainly Year 10 -12 students)

Coverage: State wide in government schools, TAFE and ACE sectors

Timeframe: 2001-2003

Regional Youth Committees

These committees, in existence since 1994, provide advice to the Minister for Youth Affairs and the Director, Office for Youth on youth related matters within a particular region.

Target group: Young people aged 12 - 25 years; youth service providers

Coverage: State wide

Timeframe: Ongoing

Youth Pathways Program

This program provides funding to deliver training to at-risk young people and provide support to assist the young person to remain in the training.

Target group: Young people aged 15 - 17 years who have left school, have not completed Year 12, are eligible for the Youth Allowance and are not employed are priorities of this program

Coverage: TAFE Institutes and ACE organisations State wide

Timeframe: 2001 - 2002

Koori Youth Group

This program provides a youth centre for Koori youth to meet, participate in activities and learn new skills and positive behaviours with mentors to support them.

Target group: Young Aboriginal people aged 11 - 25 years

Coverage: La Trobe Valley (Morwell, Traralgon, Moe, Churchill)

Timeframe: Ongoing

Responsible Agency: Indigenous Issues Unit, Portfolio Planning, Department of Justice

Bridging the Gap

This initiative aims to assist exiting prisoners by providing transitional support for high risk and high needs younger prisoners with significant substance abuse issues.

Target group: Young people aged 17-30 years exiting prison with identified reintegration needs.

Coverage: Metropolitan Melbourne.

Timeframe: This two year pilot program commenced in April 2001
