Initiatives targeting Recommendation 21

South Australia

active8 Premier's Youth Challenge

active8 provides training and community participation opportunities for young South Australians through partnerships between schools, community, youth organisations and young people.

active8 promotes in young people leadership, team work, community service, individual responsibility, self-reliance and confidence, skills development, respect for others and communication skills.

Twenty service providers work in partnership with host organisations to deliver the program in places as geographically diverse as Allendale East, Keith Loxton, Streaky Bay and Coober Pedy. The broad range of service providers includes: Air Force Cadets, Air Youth, Army and Navy Cadet Corps, Carclew Youth Arts Centre, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Country Fire Service, Police, Red Cross, Royal Life Saving, Surf Life Saving, Scouts and Guides, State Emergency Service and St John Ambulance.

The active8 Premier's Youth Challenge is an initiative in which the partnerships between government, the community sector and the private sector provide significant benefits for the young people of South Australia.

Target group: 15-19 year olds not engaged in formal education and year 8-12 students in government and non-government schools

Partnership and Outreach Education Models (POEMs)

Regional networks will ensure broad cross sectoral partnerships involving the education, community and business sectors are instrumental in building education and training pathways for young people unable to participate in mainstream education.

POEMS will be developed where:

  • Education and training services are delivered in settings where young people gather and are comfortable
  • Local partnerships involving youth and community agencies, schools, training providers and local employers are essential
  • Education and training approaches are developed and delivered in consultation with young people
  • Foundation and employability skills are a primary focus

Young people at risk or disconnected have:

  • opportunities to develop their understanding of work culture.
  • Vocation experiences in supportive and well supervised work settings
  • Opportunities to participate in SWL, obtain employability competence in IT use.

Target group: Young people who are disconnected from mainstream education and training

Hallett Cove Youth Program

Life skills, VET and SACE modules designed to meet individual student needs for disconnected young people. Delivered by the Hallett Cove Youth Service in partnership with the Southern Vocational College and Onkaparinga TAFE

Target group: Disconnected young people

Coverage: Marion Council, Hallett Cove - across Adelaide

Timeframe: Ongoing

Options West Project (Oborne House, Oceanview High School)

Learning programs, for young people who have dropped out of school, where students work (within the SACE) through an individually tailored course at their own pace, sometimes combining part-time work with their studies. In partnership with Douglas Mawson Institute of TAFE.

Paralowie House

Several agencies (including DHS) co-located and providing integrated services (accommodation, integrated youth services and senior secondary studies (including VET accreditation) program of learning within the SACE) to young people at risk in the Northern region.

Target group: Disconnected young people

Tauondi

Vocational education and training for indigenous people in a range of priority training areas

Western Youth Directions Program

Learning program for 15-18 year olds, not at school or in training or employment, to gain additional skills and qualifications that will enhance their further options. The program is within the SACE, has vocational learning and VET components.

TAFE Programs for Indigenous Youth

Accredited programs delivered for Indigenous young people in areas of high demand for Indigenous communities.

Target group: Early school leavers and young CDEP participants.

Young People, Crime Prevention and the Arts Initiative

Arts SA in partnership with the Office of Crime Prevention (Justice Portfolio) is developing a joint initiative targeting young people "at risk", using arts activity (eg drama, contemporary music, or visual art) as the medium. The objective is to offer high quality opportunities for young people to explore and express their creativity and their aspirations, provide pathways to employment and other community support systems, and to demonstrate to young people that their contributions are valued and respected. To be jointly funded initially by Arts SA and the Office of Crime Prevention.

Target group: 10-18 years

Carclew Youth Arts Centre

Carclew aims to develop and provide programs of excellence in all art forms for children and young people to the age of 26 years, including disconnected young people. Carclew delivers arts workshops, activities, training, volunteering, skill development, networking and performance opportunities for all young people.

Multicultural Youth Leadership Summits

Confirming young people's identity and pride in diversity and strategies they can take back to schools, families and peer groups to foster respect for and awareness of diversity

Target group: Emphasis on senior secondary school students
